What is a Content Management System?

June 17, 2014 Written by Third Sun

A Content Management System (CMS) is software designed to empower users with little or no knowledge of programming or HTML with authoring tools and other easy-to-manage features so that a website may be maintained with relative ease.

In modern web development a content management system of some sort is essential. Web design firms take different approaches to this reality - some build their own while others use commercial solutions and others utilize open-source software.

Third Sun Productions specializes in building websites using an open source CMS called Joomla. We currently have nearly 200 clients making use of this cost-effective and robust content management system because of the benefits the system offers.

Why Joomla?

Joomla is one of the most powerful open source content management systems available. It is literally used by and developed by thousands of people worldwide. The Joomla software is non-proprietary and does not require any expensive licensing. Joomla's user-friendly and intuitive interface allows an end user to make updates and modifications to their web content.

After evaluating many of the open source platforms, we settled on Joomla for these reasons:

  • Joomla seemed to have a engaged and active developer community. Over the years this proved to be true, as Joomla has continued to make vast improvements. With the release of Joomla 3.3 this year, Joomla took another giant leap in quality.
  • Joomla had a good balance of ease of use and flexibility. Some CMSs are much simpler and streamlined, however at the price of being rigid in their structure and setup.
  • Thousands of extensions are already available and many can be customized to meet the needs of our clients. There are excellent extensions for calendars, e-commerce, galleries, multimedia, online donations, and much more.  These add-ons create features and functionality on a website that only a few years ago would have been cost-prohibitive.

We have nearly nine years of experience working in Joomla and supporting our clients using Joomla. The support and training is a key element of a successful experience in Joomla, and after your website launches and we provide one-on-one training, we also provide annual support that includes group training workshops throughout the year.
