The Avenues: A Neighborhood Makeover

August 02, 2016 Written by Third Sun

Third Sun worked this spring with the Greater Avenues Community Council to develop two new websites (for the Council and the popular Avenues Street Fair), alongside a logo redesign. The Avenues is one of the most scenic historic neighborhoods in Salt Lake City, with its signature short blocks, ABC streets, and 123 avenues. For the logo design, our Creative Director, Michael Yount, wanted to play off this “block” theme to make the logo really representative of this physical characteristic that makes the area so unique. Because much of the neighborhood is in a designated historic neighborhood, the logo used a typeface reminiscent of popular type from a century ago, yet still modern enough for today.

Since the Avenues Street Fair is such a signature event that extends its hand beyond just residents of the Avenues, we worked with the Council to develop a standalone website that would allow for a stronger marketing effort in recruiting sponsors, volunteers, artists, performers, and other participants. The logo relies on the common “Avenues” blocks used in the Council’s logo so that it’s clearer to all that the Council owns and programs the event.

The Council’s website is more workmanlike, helping Avenues residents and board members to know about monthly meetings, neighborhood projects, and other resources in the Avenues.
